WHY WE DO IT

ERIN

JOE

To make great memoirs

It brings us joy and privilege to help guide you through the process of documenting your life story.

We'll creatively present your most meaningful memories into a compelling video, written memoir and web page. All for a reasonable, straight forward price.

If only it was as easy as hitting the record button on your iPhone. The art of storymaking is a creative, technical and time intensive process. Producing a quality info-packed video requires patience, skill, fancy equipment and most of all, some guidance and persuasion from a friend.

It might seem tedious, but the final result is hugely rewarding for everyone.

So don't let your history be a mystery,

MaKE A MiSTORY.

My Gramma Ruby once told me that I have more thoughts in my head than my brain knows what to do with. I’ve been overwhelmed by my curiosity and exhausted by my intrigue for as long as I can remember. The majority of my youth was spent daydreaming, overcomplicating and asking big questions about the world that nobody else seemed interested in. Gramma could see it just by looking in my eyes, but she always made me feel like my perspective on the world was a blessing rather than a curse.

Though I didn’t fit in with anyone at school, I felt like the luckiest kid in the world coming home to my family every evening. They made my childhood wonderful. They came up with hundreds of fun ways to encourage my weird little brain, like drawing big murals on the walls of our house with Mum and Nat, staying up til 2am with Dad having deep conversations about what’s going on in the world, playing in a band together, catching frogs in the driveway, stargazing in -40 degree weather talking about aliens, and listening to gramma and grampa’s stories as we played cards..

My family inspired me to pursue a degree in Political Science at the University of Winnipeg because I would be able to study every issue that we ever talked about at the dinner table, all at once. Everything I’ve learned because of my parents is worth far more than anything I’ve learned in classrooms. Above all, to me, the most valuable lessons I’ve learned from them are:

   a) to approach every person, place and decision with kindness and empathy; and

   2) to savour this moment

I think a lot about how lucky I was to grow up with such a loving and accepting family, and about what I’d give to have them around forever. I’d give just about anything to have my gramma look me in the eyes as if she could read my mind like she used to, and hear her tell stories again.

This is what MiSTORY is all about. Giving ordinary people the chance to tell their stories and allow their future generations to savour this moment.

Production / Editing / Web

I love recording. I've been doing it in one form or another my entire life. I also love telling stories. I used to sit up late with my kids and improvise long-winded fictional tales. Guess I probably should have been encouraging them to go to sleep.

I've had several careers over the past decades, some of which involved recording professionally. During the early 2000s I was a music producer/engineer at a recording studio. Before that I recorded in rock and jazz bands, and as teenagers my brother and I would sit up late in the basement and record wacky, made up stories onto a portable cassette deck. I even have an old reel to reel from when I was 4. I've always loved recording.

MiSTORY is a new chapter for a new decade. The kids are all grown up and we're ready and excited for this new venture together. With todays cameras and portable audio recording equipment, the technical and creative aspects of filmmaking are remarkably similar to that of the old studio days. Over the past several years I've taken a bunch of courses, bought gear, and practiced to hone the craft. My own video scrapbook made during the pandemic is at the bottom of my personal portfolio.

I'm incredibly excited about this new business journey with my family. We would be thrilled to record YoUR story and help you share it with your loved ones.
